Measures A & B of 1980
In 1979, the Human Relations Commission in coordination with local leaders convinced the Board of Supervisors to enact an ordinance protecting gays and lesbians from employment and housing discrimination. Later that same year, the San José City Council adopted its own parallel ordinance. Opponents then succeed on forcing a referendum on the issue the following year. Measures A and B of 1980 failed by a large margin, and the laws were repealed.
