SUBJECT: Sheriff Light Duty issue
I would like to have an update on an issue that I raised last year. In a memorandum to you dated
March 20, 1995(which I have attached)I asked for information of the possible alternative uses for
sheriff personnel on light duty. I am still interested in creating a system that will allow for more
sheriffs to actually be out on patrol and am looking for the following information to help achieve
this.
1.
How many sheriffs are currently on Light Duty and what percentage of the total force does that
figure represent?
2.
Whatjob assignments will the 12 net new deputies in the FY ‘97 recommended budget be
given?
3.
4.
How many sheriffs of all ranks are left at DOC,and what is the estimate after the 12 new
sheriff positions are filled?
How many sheriffs have retired over the last year and what have we done with the positions
that were created?
5.
6.
What recommendations does your department have for reducing the number of sheriffs on light
duty and what progress has been made to accomplish this compared to last year?
Work with the Sheriff to develop a strategy to increase the number of sheriffs on patrol by
working to reduce the number on fight duty.
