SUBJECT:
Adopt Resolution implementing Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection
District-owned fire stations as "Safe SuiTender" sites.
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Adopt the Resolution directing the Fire Chief to implement the Safely Surrendered Baby law
at District-owned fire stations throughout the County of Santa Clara in order to allow the safe
and confidential release of newborn infants.
ETSCAE TMPTJCATIONS
There may be some fiscal impact on the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District
associated with training and education of staff for this action. The actual fiscal impact is
unknown at this time.

REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION
On August 3, 2004, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution designating Santa Clara
County Central Fire Proteetion District fire stations as "Safe Surrender" sites in accordance
with Health and Safety Code Section 1255.7, the Safely Surrendered Baby law. The Board
designated District fire stations as "Safe Surrender" sites to increase awareness of the law and
expand the number of"Safe Surrender" sites within the County.
In order to implement the Safely Surrendered Baby law, the Board of Directors of the Santa
Clara County Central Fire Protection District may direct the Fire Chief to comply with the
requirements of the Safely Surrendered Baby Law which include; to train and educate staff to
take physical custody of a newborn pursuant to Health and Safety Code section 1255.7, and to
prominently display the state—approved Safe Surrender logo at fire station "Safe Surrender"
sites.
CONSEOTJENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION
The District-owned fire stations cannot be designated as "Safe Surrender" sites.
STEPS FOLLOWING APPROVAL
The Clerk of the Board of Directors for the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection
District will send a copy of the Resolution to the Fire Chief
