HOMELESS TASK FORCE

Jim Beall worked intensely as Co-Chair ofthe Homeless Task Force. On May 3, 2005,
the Board accepted the recommendation on the Task Force final report,"Keys to
Housing; A 10 year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness." This was developed over a five
month period by a task force of45 members.

The Task Force members produced recommended changes in how the homeless problem
is currently being addressed in Santa Clara County. Jim has been instrumental in
focusing that the first priority should be in focusing to prevent people especially youth
from entering the cycle of homelessness in the first place. He has also begun working to
linking 18 year olds from the foster care system with permanent supportive housing. He
stresses the urgency since nearly one third offoster children end up homeless.
Jim has continued his work on recommendations made in the report including referrals

relating to housing for mental health residents. More recently he requested a verbal

referral at a 9/27/05 Board meeting that was reported back to the BOS with
recommendations for mental health housing and use of prop 63 funds on the 1/10/06
Board meeting.
